What Causes Depression?

This article will take a look at what causes depression, which I believe to be a very important factor when looking at treatments for depression.

Causes Of Depression:

  • Stress
  • Loneliness
  • Illness
  • Bereavment
  • Stuck in a dead end job or unemployment
  • Family history of depression
  • Alcohol and/or drug abuse

I'm sure for other individuals there will be other causes for depression, however this list covers some of the main things that can cause an individual to be unhappy.

Depression can be caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social factors.

A biological reason will be physical or chemical and would involve neurotransmitters in the brain or hormones released in the body. This is impossible to avoid, especially since it can run in the family and genetics may play a role. There are however some drugs which can be prescribed depending on what neurotransmitter or hormone is out of sync. It might also be beneficial to do some exercise as this is known to release some natural chemicals which could break the depression cycle.

There are some depression causes which will be easier to treat. For example, if you are depressed due to an abusive relationship help yourself by distancing yourself from this, or if you are depressed at your current job, take a look at what you really want to be doing and taking steps towards making that happen and finding a satisfying career that will make you happy.

If you change your situation it could help you beat depression. It is not always easy to change your situation but if you recognise what causes depression for you, you will be one step closer to finding the right treatment!

In a later article we will take a look at different treatments for depression, focussing on natural treatments which will boost moods and increase serotonin or other natural chemicals in the brain.
